A trick for remembering it
Group letters by length instead of learning A to Z. The one-symbol letters are E (.) and T (-). Two symbols: I (..), A (.-), N (-.), M (--). Three: S, U, R, W, D, K, G, O. Those 14 letters already cover about 80% of ordinary English text, so you can read simple messages early.
Then learn the mirrored pairs listed in the questions below, and the numbers, which follow a strict pattern. Always practise by ear: sight-reading dots is a much slower skill than hearing “di-dah” as the letter A.
Questions people ask
What is SOS in Morse code?
SOS is ··· ––– ··· (three dots, three dashes, three dots). It is sent as one continuous signal with no letter gaps, which is why it is written with an overbar as a “procedural sign”. It was chosen in 1906 because it is easy to send and hard to mistake, not because it stands for “save our souls”.
How do you say “I love you” in Morse code?
“I love you” is .. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- — I, then LOVE, then YOU, with slashes marking the word gaps. The short form “ILY” is .. .-.. -.-- and the old telegraph code 88 (---.. ---..) means “love and kisses”.
What is the easiest way to learn the Morse alphabet?
Learn by sound, not by looking at charts. The Koch method starts with two letters at full speed (around 20 WPM) and adds a new one each time you copy 90% correctly. Pair it with Farnsworth spacing so each letter stays a single rhythm.
Is there Morse code for lowercase letters?
No. Morse has no case, so “A” and “a” are both .-. Translators output uppercase when decoding.
Which letters are opposites in Morse?
Several pairs mirror each other by swapping dots and dashes: A (.-) and N (-.), D (-..) and U (..-), G (--.) and W (.--), B (-...) and V (...-), K (-.-) and R (.-.). Spotting these pairs halves the memorising.
